CBD Tinctures: What Your Need to Know Before You Buy

Experts everywhere recommend using CBD for all sorts of reasons. But where do you start? With so many different iterations, strengths, and forms of CBD, it’s easy to get frustrated when it comes to finding the right kind. From oils, to honey, to gummies, your average CBD user is spoiled for choice.

One of the most popular forms of CBD is called a tincture. Let’s walk through what a tincture really is, how it compares to other forms, and all of the basics you need to know in order to make the right choice for your purchase. Let’s start by explaining the difference between a tincture and an oil, two forms that are often confused.

CBD Tincture vs. CBD Oil – What’s the Difference?

CBD tinctures and oils are two of the most common methods for taking CBD. While they may sound like they’re worlds apart, they’re actually remarkably similar.

Let’s start with CBD oil. CBD oil is created by extracting pure CBD oil from the plant that CBD comes from, hemp. Hemp is similar to marijuana in almost everything except for its active ingredient. Hemp contains only a negligible amount of THC (or even none at all), which is the chemical that can make you feel “high” or euphoric. Instead, hemp is CBD-dominant. CBD does not make you high, and is the only active ingredient in hemp.

CBD oil is considered the most “pure” form of CBD, and as such, the most potent. People very rarely consume straight CBD oil; instead, they’ll vape it or bake it into something with a fat content like cookies or brownies. Taking pure CBD oil orally is not recommended, as it can taste pretty bitter and oily.

A CBD tincture, by contrast, can be thought of as CBD oil that’s been dressed up for a party. In a tincture, the CBD oil has been dissolved and then suspended in a carrier oil, such as hemp seed oil or MCT. ZenLeaf offers a full range of CBD tinctures for you to enjoy. See for yourself why they’re so highly rated!

Do pure CBD tinctures have THC in them?

No. A verified pure CBD tincture will be rid of all THC, even trace amounts. This is because it’s typically made from an isolate, which means that the CBD is chemically isolated from THC at the molecular level during its production. ZenLeaf CBD tinctures are a Pure CBD isolate for the most pure CBD experience money can buy.

It’s important to note here that some products will be mislabeled, claiming to be “pure” when they actually aren’t. Buying from ZenLeaf Health guarantees that the label on your product is 100% accurate.

What are the health benefits of using CBD tinctures?

There are plenty! Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD usage is recommended for a variety of health benefits.

Of course, you should never use CBD tinctures in place of a traditionally prescribed medication without first consulting your doctor. CBD has many benefits, but it has not been proven to cure any disorder.

You should also speak with your doctor before using CBD if you are currently taking other medication. While CBD is generally considered a fairly safe and inert compound, you should still get all of the information before making your purchase.

Are there side effects of CBD usage?

When taking any medicinal substance, there can be side effects to consider. Thankfully, with CBD, the side effects are fairly mild. Some users report feeling fatigued or sometimes even having diarrhea when CBD tinctures. In general, there should be very few noticeable side effects. If you begin to experience severe side effects, stop your CBD use immediately and call your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

CBD is an abbreviation of cannabidiol—a natural, non-psychoactive concentrate from the hemp plant that has unique benefits. CBD is different from hemp oil (which is a nutritious oil in its own right) in that it is made from the flowers and leaves.

Scientists researching the effects of marijuana discovered an unknown biochemical communication network in the human body known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that plays a crucial role in regulating our nervous system, including the brain. It plays a role in balancing many processes in the body, including immune response, cell communication, appetite and metabolism and others. Endocannabinoids are chemical compounds produced naturally in our bodies and help to regulate physiological functions—including sleep, appetite, pain, inflammation and mood. If we are dealing with stressors, such as illness, injury, or poor nutrition, then we can help our body’s production of these endocannabinoids by taking ‘phytocannabinoids’ found in plants such as hemp. At least 104 different cannabinoids have been isolated from the cannabis plant. Most research has been conducted on tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN). Research shows that even in small doses, cannabis cannabinoids can stimulate the body to produce more endocannabinoids and create more cannabinoid receptors in the body.

Oral CBD should be taken under the tongue and held for 60 seconds to be fully absorbed. It can be rubbed on the gums for faster action. CBD can also be used topically and rubbed onto areas of pain or inflammation for quick relief, which is why we have crafted our unique therapeutic CBD creams and balms.

CBD may do different things at different doses: a phenomenon known as the ‘bidirectional effect’. More is not necessarily better since overstimulation of the body’s endocannabinoid system may exacerbate symptoms instead of alleviating them. Dosing is individual to the person. We recommend beginning with a smaller dose and percentage and building up from there. For example, begin with 5 drops and increase to 20 drops as required. If this is not strong enough then move to a higher percentage extract. A 5% extract (ie 1000mg CBD in 20ml carrier oil) is considered a medium-strength CBD and higher concentrations of 10-15% will confer more noticeable effects.

We use a method known as C02 extraction (also known as supercritical extract), which is regarded as the gold standard form of CBD oil as it is full spectrum, chemical free and strong enough to confer the potential phytocannabinoid benefits. It uses pressurised carbon dioxide (C02) to pull CBD and other compounds from the plant. We use custom-engineered machinery for supercritical fluid extraction, which is made especially for producing hemp extract, ensuring not only full-spectrum cannabinoids naturally present in the hemp plant, but also terpenes, flavonoids, and other natural substances.

Cannabis and hemp plants are ‘phytoremediators’, meaning they absorb everything from the soil they are grown in. Farmers have grown hemp to clean soil that has become contaminated because hemp removes heavy metals and radioactive toxins from polluted soil, even transforming toxins into other harmless substances. If there are even trace amounts of chemicals, pesticides, or any other toxic elements, these will end up in the plant itself. As such, we believe growing organic hemp is really the only way to safely develop it.

There are three different classes of CBD extract. Full spectrum CBD oil contains trace amounts of other cannabinoids as well as flavonoids and a greater range of terpenes, the essential oils found in Cannabis sativa. This creates an ‘entourage effect’—a synergy of mutually-enhancing benefits created by all the botanical compounds working together.

Our CBD oil contains a full spectrum of cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenoids naturally occurring in cannabis, such as CBDV, CBDA, CBC, CBG, CBN, etc. Full spectrum also contains trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabis’s mood-altering compound, but as it is permitted to be no higher than 0.2% it can’t get you ‘high’.

Broad-spectrum CBD contains a range of naturally occurring compounds from the cannabis plant, but typically no THC.

CBD isolate undergoes the most processing to turn the extract into the pure, refined form of CBD. Without the naturally occurring oils, isolate has no aroma or taste, but it also loses the synergy of the original plant and the entourage effect.

Full spectrum usually contains trace amounts of THC. Higher strength products undergo additional filtration to ensure THC levels are below permitted levels. Currently THC levels in Zen CBD’s products has been tested to be between 0.00% to 0.05%. This is an insignificant amount that cannot cause the user to feel ‘high’.

Yes, as the hemp is harvested each batch is independently lab tested for 120 different classes of contaminants, including pesticide residues and heavy metals. This is essential because hemp is a crop that absorbs a lot from the environment, so it should be organically grown.

Moreover, the raw materials are tested both during and at the end of the production for 14 different cannabinoids including CBD/THC content .

Yes. In 2020 the Food Standards Agency intervened in the burgeoning CBD industry and from March 2021 UK CBD companies will have to apply to have their product registered and authorised as a novel food. This means that before any product containing CBD can be legally marketed in the UK, it must undergo a pre-market safety assessment and authorisation.
