FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Using the Simple CBD Oil Dosage Calculator CBD Dosing Calculator for Pets
Many people have seen the benefits of CBD for pet health and wellness, and we’re sure your four-legged fur baby is going to love you even more for the purchase.
You may be wondering what the right CBD dosage for pets looks like.
The first step in determining the correct dosage is to check out our handy little calculator above. It’s pretty simple: in just three steps you’ll know the perfect dose, as well as what products we recommend for your pet.
- The first step is to select what type of pet you are looking for.
- The second step is to select your pets weight in lbs.
- Last, but not least is to select what level of dosage you wish to give your pet (Minimum – Maximum)
As you can see by the last part, figuring out the CBD dosage for dogs can be trickier if they are a bit on the bigger side. What’s nice about dosing CBD is you have a ballpark that you can work within, so even if your pup has put on some weight since his last visit to the vet, as long as you don’t exceed the maximum daily dose you’ll be good.
To determine the maximum daily dose, we use a limit of 5 mg/kg or 5 mg per 2.2 lbs. We increase this recommended maximum only when new studies emerge supporting higher doses. Please talk to your veterinarian about doses higher than 5mg/kg.
Figuring out the correct CBD dosage for pets will largely be up to you, as the owner. You know your pet best. Make sure to keep an eye on him for a few hours after you first administer CBD; pay attention to the effects it has so you know how to adjust the dose to maximize the benefits.
Besides just showing you the minimum, average, and maximum dose, our CBD oil dosage calculator will tell you roughly how many drops your CBD bottle contains, the concentration of your CBD bottle, and the concentration of the CBD itself.
Our CBD dosage calculator is a handy little tool that helps you improve your pet’s health.
Using the Detailed CBD Oil Dosing Chart
First find the Dosing Chart specific to the product and variant that you will be administering to your pet for example. PurCBD (Product) & 125mg (variant).
From there decide on what strength of dosage you want to give your pet: Minimum, Average, Medium, Strong or Maximum. If not sure, start with minimum.
- The Minimum dose is calculated based on 0.05mg/kg
- The Average dose is calculated based on 0.45mg/kg
- The Strong dose is calculated based on 1.25mg/kg
- The Maximum daily dose is calculated based on 5.00mg/kg
Find your pet’s weight on the left hand side of the chart and follow the grid to the right until you reach the desired strength you have decided on. When you arrive to the correct block it will give you the suggested drops to administer your pet every 6-8 hours (Note that ½ of the dropper is equivalent to 16 drops).
If your suggested dosage says to use another level of CBD find the respected dosing chart and start off with the minimum dosage for your pets weight.
Dosing CBD doesn’t have to be confusing. In fact, some of the best advice we can offer is to monitor how your pet reacts to CBD and make adjustments accordingly. Unlike many drugs, there is little to worry about when increases dosages.
Some pets react well to low doses, while others need a good bit more. We always recommend watching for side effects or abnormalities whenever changing dosages, but if you see your pet reacting well to a higher dose, there is nothing to be concerned about.
How Much Hemp CBD For Specific Medical Conditions?
These are some of the most frequently asked questions we get, and we have an easy answer for you.
How Much CBD For Anxiety, Epilepsy or Cancer?
Unfortunately the FDA does not allow us to recommend specific doses based on specific medical conditions. What Happens If You Give Your Pet Too Much CBD?
If you give your pet too much CBD, you may notice that it makes them tired — where a lower dose may have given them a boost in their step. If you notice this side effect, there is little to nothing to worry about.
In fact, some pet owners purposely give their pets high doses of CBD to help with insomnia. Common side effects such as nausea or diarrhea may happen, but they are fairly rare and mild.
The one side effect of concern with high doses of CBD is its affinity to temporarily inhibit enzymes that metabolize drugs in the liver — grapefruit does this as well.
As such, if your pet is on a dosage-sensitive prescription drug that’s metabolized in the liver, you’ll likely want to keep CBD dosages mild or low.
Your veterinarian will be able to help you monitor your pet to ensure that CBD’s relationship with the other drug is positive.
In many cases, a specific CBD dosage has led to a decrease in the other drug’s dosage with no increase of side effects.
Our CBD pet calculator will help you find the correct low and mild dosage based on your pet’s weight, and we absolutely recommend talking to your veterinarian first before doing this on your own. Last check out this article that explores the issue in-depth.
What’s Better For Dosage: CBD Oil, Treats, Capsules, etc?
If you’re looking for precise dosages, our PurCBD+ oil/tincture is still your best option as capsules and treats will carry a one-size-fits-all dose.
However, this is not much of a concern as even extremely large doses are well tolerated by most pets with no signs of side effects.
Another pro of the tincture is it’s fast absorption rate.
Besides those two factors, there are only a few minor differences amongst CBD products, which you can find out about below.
How to Dose with CBD Capsules, Treats, Chews, and Pellets
Our Hemp CBD Gold Capsules contain 5 mg each making them great for dogs 40 lbs and up. At this weight level, most pet owners find moving up the dosage in increments of 5 mg is effective and preferred.
Like all other forms of CBD, capsules typically provide relief of symptoms for 6-8 hours. In that time, you can administer more CBD if needed. Unlike the oil/tincture, capsules have to pass through the digestive system before it’s absorbed into the bloodstream so expect 30-60 minutes before you see CBD working.
If they need a quicker onset of relief, we recommend PurCBD+. The thin tissue of the mouth makes CBD readily absorbable, and you’ll typically see CBD working within 10-30 minutes depending on how long your pet held the oil in their mouth.
Hemp Treats & Soft Chews
Our Hemp Dog Treats and Hemp Soft Chews are 4 mg and 2 mg. Making the treats fantastic for dogs 20 lbs and up. While our Soft Chews are great for small pets under 15 lbs and older dogs that have trouble chewing harder treats.
It’s surprisingly difficult to find dose-appropriate treats for small pets, so we knew we had to change that.
Like the capsules, treats will have to pass through the digestive tract before the body can absorb it so expect the onset of effects to begin within 30-60 minutes. Feel free to break the treats in half for around half the regular dose if needed.
CBD for Horses
Equine Hemp Pellets
While catered to riders, farriers, trainers, and large-animal veterinarians, we designed our Hemp Pellets in a way that makes them perfect for all animals that consume food in pellet form.
Instead of making a large one-size-fits-all pellet we broke up the large dose into mini-pellets. This allows goats, sheep, and even pocket pets like rabbits to benefit from taking hemp CBD.
Here is the guideline to follow when giving Equine Hemp Pellets to your horse. 1 tablespoon equals 25 mg. Remember this is just a guideline and starting point.
Your average CBD capsule formulated for humans is around 10-15 mg, and that’s what we recommend for a 350 lb miniature horse.
If administering to a much smaller animal, you’ll want to check out the charts “Generic Hemp Equine Pellets Dosage Guide” and “Hemp CBD Tier Dosage Guidelines”.
Hemp Pellets Dosage Guide For Horses:
- Miniature ( 1500lbs) = 65 mg
Generic Hemp Pellets Dosage Guide:
- 1 tbsp = 25 mg
- ½ Tbsp = 12.2 mg
- 1 tsp = 8.3 mg
- ½ tsp = 4.15
- ¼ tsp = 2 mg
All in all, giving your pet too much CBD will just likely result in you wasting money. This often limits small pet owners to the tincture form, but at Innovet Pet, we were determined to not have that happen to you.
That’s why we provide Soft Hemp Chews that are appropriately dosed for small pets and easy on their smaller jaws. We even have farm animals and pocket pets covered with our Hemp Pellets.

Choosing the correct CBD dose for your dog can be pretty confusing. First of all, each company’s dosing guidelines can vary widely because the concentration of CBD varies in the oils they produce.
The dosage can also differ depending on the condition you’re trying to treat. For example, higher doses are typically recommended for more serious health conditions and lower doses for occasional anxiety or general well-being.
And of course, you have your dog’s weight and underlying health issues to take into consideration.
With no standard guidelines or regulated doses, how do you know how much CBD oil to give your dog? Use our comprehensive dosage guide to know you’re giving your dog the ideal amount of CBD oil. And, always check the packaging carefully to make sure you are giving the company’s recommended amounts.
Don’t let the confusion behind dosing deter you from the ultimate health benefits your dog can enjoy from this all-natural remedy.

Benefits Of CBD Oil For Dogs
Before diving into dosing guidelines, here are some of the health conditions that CBD can help treat in your dog.
- Anxiety and stress
- Moderate to severe pain
- Chronic inflammation
- Arthritis & joint pain
- Digestion problems (also see information about dog probiotics and tips to cure a dog’s upset stomach)
- Symptoms from cancer
Some dog owners report it also can help treat epileptic seizures but scientific studies are still underway to confirm this benefit. We recommend talking to your vet before starting treatment for this or any other of the claimed benefits to make sure CBD is safe for your pup.
Tips About CBD Oil For Dogs
There are three major factors that influence the dosing of CBD for dogs (and cats).
- The potency of CBD in the oil, treat or capsule
- Your dog’s size and weight
- The ailment you’re treating
Always keep these factors in mind, and follow these additional tips from holistic veterinarians, who have loads of experience using CBD for pets:
- Consult your veterinarian before you give your pet any treatments.
- Take into account your dog’s activity level — this can help you determine how your dog will metabolize CBD (and other medications).
- Consider your dog’s other health conditions that may affect his ability to react to or metabolize CBD, i.e., liver or kidney problems.
- Find a high-quality CBD oil that’s free of any kinds of toxins. Since the industry isn’t yet regulated, there are some potentially sketchy products out there.
- Buy the correct potency for your dog’s size. Most oils come in different CBD potencies, i.e., 75mg for small dogs; 300+mg for large dogs. Each company differs in the potency levels they sell. Note: this potency is only for the amount of CBD, not THC (the CBD products we review do not contain THC).
How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?
The best advice we can give you is to start small and then ease into the manufacturer’s dosing guidelines for their specific products. Companies that formulate their own high-quality CBD typically give you very detailed instructions on how to dose their various products. But not all do, so it can be helpful to know how to calculate optimal CBD dosages.
Calculating CBD Oil Dosages For Medicinal Use
If you’re planning on using CBD oil for medicinal purposes, e.g., to treat arthritis pain or ease seizures, here’s how to calculate a safe and effective dosage for your pet. First, you need to calculate approximately how many milligrams (mg) of CBD your dog should have based on his weight. A safe rule of thumb is 0.2mg of CBD per pound. So, if your dog weighs 25 pounds, you’ll give him 5mg of CBD.
Then, you need to calculate how much oil you should give your dog based on how many milligrams (mg) of CBD is in each milliliter (ml) of oil. This will depend on the formula strength you’re using.
Here are some common formula strengths and how much CBD is in each:
- 75mg formula=2.5mg of CBD per ml of oil
- 150mg formula=5mg of CBD per ml of oil
- 300mg formula=10mg of CBD per ml of oil
- 600mg formula=20mg of CBD per ml of oil
So for a 25-pound pet who needs 5mg of CBD, you’d give him 2ml of the 75mg formula, 1ml of the 150mg formula, 0.5ml of the 300mg formula. We would not recommend using the 600mg formula on small pets due to the difficulty in administering 0.25ml with the oral syringe most companies provide.
How To Determine CBD Oil Dosage For General Well-Being
If you’re using CBD oil for general well-being, your dog may not need this higher dosage level. You can always cut down the dosage if you want.
CBD Dosing Example
Even with all this information, it’s hard to picture what actual dosing guidelines look like from different companies. Here, we’ve included what King Kanine, a company that specializes in high-quality CBD oils and treats for pets, recommends when dosing their pet CBD products. King Kanine’s dosage guidelines apply to both dogs and cats.
IMPORTANT: This dosage may not apply to the product you are using from another company.
First, you have to choose the formula based on your pet’s weight. This is the concentration of CBD in each bottle. King Kanine offers three formulas: 75mg, 150mg and 300mg. Each formula bottle contains 30ml of oil. (King Kanine’s CBD is suspended in krill oil, but the type of oil varies by company.)
King Kanine Formula Recommendations
- Small-sized pet 20 lbs & under: 75mg bottle (approximately 2.5mg of CBD/1ml)
- Medium-sized pet 21-50 lbs: 150mg bottle (approximately 5mg of CBD/1ml)
- Large-sized pet 51-75 lbs: 300mg bottle (approximately 10mg of CBD/1ml)
- Extra Large-sized pet over 75 lbs: 600mg bottle (approximately 20mg of CBD/1ml)
King Kanine 150mg Formula Dosing Chart
Each formula contains a detailed dosing chart that includes how many milliliters you should give based on your dog’s weight and whether you plan on using it for standard or medicinal use. The chart also includes a helpful graphic of the oral syringe you’ll use to administer the dosage. This chart is for King Kanine’s King Kalm 150mg formula.
What About CBD Dog Treats?
If you purchase CBD dog treats from a reputable company, they’ll give you serving size suggestions based on your dog’s weight. But you can still use the calculation method above to determine how many King Kanine treats will be effective for your pup.
What Are The Best CBD Oil & Treats For Dogs?
Finding the right dosage of any medication is crucial for your dog since their systems are more sensitive than humans. But the encouraging news about CBD (if you buy a high-quality product), is that pure CBD is non-toxic for dogs. And there don’t appear to be any harmful side effects from using this all-natural remedy, even on a regular basis.
