Why is it that people who consume marijuana regularly, “stoners”, are always portrayed as skinny even though smoking marijuana is known to increase ones appetite, normally known as “the munchies”? It is a stereotype however there are some truths behind it.

Both Cannabidoil (CBD) and ∆(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the two most prominent cannabinoids in the marijuana plant, have a direct effect on your appetite. CBD and THC both interact with the endocannabinoid system that is found all over our bodies, a system that regulates the metabolism and storage, nutrient transport and the intake energy from food. They regulate these things through the CB1 receptors that are found everywhere throughout the body.
THC locks itself onto the cell receptors in the brain that are related to triggering Ghrelin (the hunger hormone) therefore increasing hunger and appetite. A study conducted in 2015 on Diet-Induced Obese rats found that THC did increase the rats appetites but it stopped further weight gain, even with a high fat diet. This is due to the reduction of energy intake in the digestive system.
Along side this CBD has been found to be an appetite suppressor. It does not stop you eating entirely but it can make you feel fuller sooner. A British study on this subject, using rats, found that in comparison with rats that were given cannabis molecule Cannabinol, the rats that were given CBD consumed considerably less food over the study period (Farrimond, JA. 2012). The conclusion of this study was that CBD can reduce food intake but more research needs to be done on its anti-obesity effects.
As with any weight loss plans, exercise and diet is the key to success. Only taking CBD oil would not work entirely on its own, but it has been suggested that certain strains of marijuana (ones higher in CBD which are most Savita’s) can help a person focus and be more active. Marijuana and Metabolism
As almost everyone knows, THC can increase your appetite and so affect your metabolism by making you feel like you need to eat everything you can find. However, THC is only one of the hundreds of cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant. The next most prominent cannabinoid is cannabidiol, better known as CBD, which has a totally different effect. Not only is it non-psychoactive meaning you won’t get high by taking it, but CBD also works beneficially on your metabolism.
How does CBD affect body weight and our metabolism?
Whilst THC is well known for its effect on our appetite due to something technically known as ‘the munchies’, not everyone knows what effect CBD has. In fact, CBD works in the opposite way to THC in terms of increased appetite, but the same way in terms of speeding up the metabolism. This means it can be more effective at helping you lose weight than smoking weed as you won’t feel the need to fill your stomach endlessly as the munchies won’t go away.

As you may have already guessed, CBD actually responds to fat in the body in three ways which each serve to increase the likelihood that you will lose weight or at least be prevented from putting it on. One particular Korean study carried out in 2016 found that CBD stimulates proteins in the body that help to breakdown fat and boosts both the number and activity of mitochondria which serves to increase the body’s inclination to burn calories.
This study also found that CBD doesn’t just break down existing fat faster, and increase your calorie burn, but also prevents the development of fat in the first place by moderating the expression of certain proteins that lead to fat cell formation. Since excess fat is seen as a major contributory factor towards the development of illnesses and disease like diabetes and heart disease this is a great thing.
Does CBD make you hungry?
This is a great question to ask given the effects that THC can have on our hunger, however, in products that are predominantly CBD based, people very rarely experience an increase in their appetite. This is because appetite increase happens when a high concentration of THC leads to your CB1 cannabinoid receptor binding with the THC causing your appetite to rise. CBD, on the other hand, does not bind directly with your CB1 receptor.
As such, you’re only likely to experience an increase in hunger if your CBD oil contains THC and you take enough for the THC content to stimulate your hunger. Given most CBD oils contain little to no THC this is not likely to happen for most people. This is where things do get slightly more complicated. Our body’s metabolic functions are directly connected to the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is also what CBD interacts with, in our body. When CBD interacts with our ECS it changes how we store energy and transport nutrients.
A 2008 study in the Journal of Neuroendocrinology also found that the ECS can stimulate the areas of the body involved in the metabolism due to the presence of naturally occurring compounds that interact with our ECS receptors. When you are also adding THC into the mix, our metabolism can be increased along with our appetite which allows weed smokers to eat more calories than usual without putting on as much weight.
How big does the dose of CBD have to be to aid with weight loss?
As all of our endocannabinoid systems are different, the exact dose of CBD required to help you with weight loss will vary from person to person. This is due to differences in our genetics, our weight, our history of cannabis and CBD use, our physical health, and our ethnicity. This means that whilst 10mg of CBD a day might suppress one person’s appetite, it might take 50mg or more for someone else.
The key thing to remember if you are using CBD to help you lose weight is that it is important to gradually introduce it and only increase your dose gradually.
